Harmonized System (HS)

An internationally standardized system used to classify traded products. The first six digits of an HS code are universal worldwide, but each country adds additional digits to further specify products. These codes play a role in determining import and export controls and duty rates. The HS is administrated by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and is updated every five years.
