AUSFTA (Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement) is a trade agreement that promotes and liberalizes trade between the U.S. and Australia. The AUSFTA entered into force on January 1, 2005. Its primary goal is to eliminate barriers to trade and investment between the two countries.
For U.S. exporters, the agreement’s most significant benefit is the elimination of import tariffs on nearly all U.S. manufactured goods exported to Australia. To receive this duty-free treatment, the U.S. exporter must be able to prove that their product originates in the United States according to the agreement’s specific Rules of Origin.
This is typically done by providing the Australian importer with a Certificate of Origin or other documentation demonstrating that the product meets the rule (e.g., it was wholly manufactured in the U.S.).
