Block Stowage

Block stowage is a strategic marine loading technique used to minimize cargo movement and simplify discharge by grouping all containers or cargo units destined for the same port into a single block within the vessel’s hold or on deck.

This method is crucial for vessel efficiency. By ensuring that all cargo for the first port of call (Port A) is stowed together, the stevedores can unload Port A’s entire cargo block without having to shift, or “work,” any cargo destined for the subsequent ports (Port B, Port C). This is particularly important for project and oversized cargo, where every handling step increases risk and time.
