Home Glossary Contraband

Contraband

Contraband refers to goods that are prohibited by law from being imported, exported, possessed, or transported. These goods may include illegal drugs, unauthorized weapons, counterfeit currency, protected wildlife products, or items restricted due to sanctions or trade embargoes. Governments regulate contraband to protect public safety, national security, public health, and intellectual property rights. Customs authorities are responsible for detecting and seizing contraband at borders, ports, and airports. In some contexts, contraband may also refer to goods that are legal in general but restricted during wartime or under special regulations. Possession or trafficking of contraband can result in severe penalties, including fines, imprisonment, and confiscation of goods. Modern customs enforcement relies on inspections, intelligence sharing, scanning technology, and international cooperation to prevent contraband smuggling. Clear classification and compliance procedures help legitimate traders avoid inadvertently violating laws related to restricted or prohibited goods.
