Difference between multimodal and intermodal transportation

IT: Requires separate contracts with each carrier involved in the journey. This can be time-consuming and complex to manage;
MT: Employs a single contract with a multimodal transport operator (MTO) that is responsible for the entire shipment, even if subcontractors are used. This simplifies the process and offers greater accountability.

Carrier responsibility

IT: Each carrier is only responsible for their specific leg of the journey. If damage occurs, identifying the responsible party can be challenging;
MT: The MTO assumes full responsibility for the entire shipment, from origin and destination. This provides shippers with a single point of contract and simplifies claims handling.

Cost and efficiency

IT: Generally cheaper than MT due to direct carrier contracts. However, negotiating with multiple carriers and managing complex paperwork is time-consuming;
MT: Is Often more expensive due to MTO’s service fee. However, simplified logistics and a single point of contact can improve overall efficiency.
