Multimodal transportation is critical to modern international shipping processes. Learn about this type of transportation service and how goods are shipped and reach their destination.

What is Multimodal transportation?โ€‹

Multimodal transportation or shipping refers to shipping goods via more than one of the four primary modes: ocean, rail, road, and air. Although it can be applied at a regional level, it is primarily utilized in international and global freight shipping.

The primary objective is to reduce delivery times and optimize logistics to ensure goods reach their final destination as efficiently as possible.

Difference between multimodal and intermodal transportation

While both intermodal transportation(IT) and multimodal transportation(MT) utilize multiple transportation modes, their approach to contracts and carrier responsibility fundamentally differs.

Contracts

  • IT: Requires separate contracts with each carrier involved in the journey. This can be time-consuming and complex to manage;
  • MT: Employs a single contract with a multimodal transport operator (MTO) that is responsible for the entire shipment, even if subcontractors are used. This simplifies the process and offers greater accountability.

Carrier responsibility

  • IT: Each carrier is only responsible for their specific leg of the journey. If damage occurs, identifying the responsible party can be challenging;
  • MT: The MTO assumes full responsibility for the entire shipment, from origin and destination. This provides shippers with a single point of contract and simplifies claims handling.

Cost and efficiency

  • IT: Generally cheaper than MT due to direct carrier contracts. However, negotiating with multiple carriers and managing complex paperwork is time-consuming;
  • MT: Is Often more expensive due to MTOโ€™s service fee. However, simplified logistics and a single point of contact can improve overall efficiency.

If you value simplicity and ease of management, multimodal transportation is your option.

Benefits of Multimodal transportationโ€‹

Multimodal transportation services coordinate multiple modes of freight transportation to ensure the following benefits:

  • Optimization of freight routes to reduce congestion at ports;
  • Decreased transportation costs, making the importation of goods less expensive;
  • Reduced transportation times, resulting in faster deliveries;
  • Higher security and better cargo tracking standards, reducing theft and losses;
  • The cargo remains together (no โ€œbreaksโ€ or separation) and is covered under a single bill of lading, simplifying logistics.
