Port of Melbourne, at 3.396 million TEU in 2024, a record, and comfortably the busiest container port in the country. Port Botany in Sydney is second, at around 2.8 million TEU.

There isn’t a single answer, because it depends on destination. Melbourne, Brisbane, and Fremantle are the strongest all-round gateways for machinery bound for the cities, while the resource ports (Newcastle, Gladstone, Darwin, and Townsville) have the heavy-lift capacity for mining and oversized project cargo.

Melbourne, Brisbane, Fremantle, and Adelaide all handle RoRo cargo, with Townsville also taking rolling stock. Port Kembla is New South Wales’ dedicated RoRo and vehicle-import gateway, handling 100% of the state’s motor vehicle imports — not Port Botany, which is container-focused. Melbourne is Australia’s leading vehicle port overall.

Cargo from the US West Coast typically lands at the eastern container ports (Melbourne, Botany, and Brisbane), with Fremantle and Adelaide also served. The choice depends on the cargo’s final destination within Australia.

Brisbane and Adelaide are strong choices given their agricultural focus and breakbulk capacity, while Melbourne and Fremantle handle agricultural machinery well for their regions. The right one depends on where the equipment is headed.

Roughly 18 to 30 days from the US West Coast to the eastern Australian ports, and longer, often 28 to 42 days, from the US East and Gulf Coasts or to Fremantle in the west. Confirm current schedules at booking, since routing conditions shift.

A commercial invoice, bill of lading, packing list, and import declaration at minimum, plus biosecurity documentation — a cleanliness or phytosanitary certificate for any machine that has contacted soil, and a BMSB treatment certificate for equipment shipped from the US during the 1 September–30 April season.
